The Dead Sea area is a world wide unique natural site. The specialty of this site can be attributed to several factors, such as its location 400 meters below sea level and the resulted special biodiversity system due to this location. In addition to that it is rich with natural resources like ground water, surface water and especially the spring's system. There are also the high economical values of salts in the Dead Sea itself.

Presently, the Dead Sea body is composed of two parts, northern and southern, separated by the Lisan Island.
The main tributary of the Dead Sea is the Jordan River, which drains into the northern edge. The surface of the Dead Sea decreased from 1032 square kilometer in 1947 to 683 square kilometer in 1994.
The southern part was more affected than the northern part and totally disappeared by the end of the seventies. Causes of this decrease are related to the installation of the potash project and the decrease of surface water pouring into the Dead Sea.
