Jordan is blessed with a Mediterranean climate for pleasurable year-round travel. The best times to visit Jordan are spring (April-May) which brings optimal weather, lush with greenery, and Autumn (September-October) when the weather is delightful and dry (but not oppressive) and the Dead Sea and Red Sea are still pleasantly warm. Because of the capital city’s elevation evenings are cool.
Winter season, from November through March, is generally mild; spells of rain are interspersed with brilliant sunshine. Aqaba and Jordan Valley (Dead Sea area) are ideal winter resorts with temperature averaging 16-22°C (61-72 F) between November and April. Conservative dress is advisable for both men and women in downtown Amman and outside of Amman and the holiday resorts (Dead Sea, Aqaba). We help you with some recommendations on the most important things to bring with yourself.
- Pack hiking boots / trainers / sandals for trips in Wadi Rum and Petra.
- Do not forget to bring sunglasses, sunscreen to protect yourself from sunburn.
- Swimsuits, flipflops for beach holidays are essential.
- Bring hat, baseball cap or scarf for protecting your head and hair.
- Cardigans, light coats are ideal for cooler evenings
The local currency is the Jordanian Dinar (symbol JD or JOD), which is often called “JD”. It is divided into 100 piasters (Pronounced Qirsh) or 1000 fils.
There are 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50 JD notes (bills) used, and you will usually see prices written as 4.750. There also different coins from: 5, 10, 25, and 50 piasters. It is useful to carry some coins and low denominations.
In terms of credit cards American Express, Visa, Diners Club and MasterCard are accepted in hotels, restaurants and larger shops. ATMs can be found in most of the larger towns and throughout Amman.
Currency can be exchanged at major banks, local exchange houses and at most hotels. Changing money with an individual in the street is best to be avoided. The Jordanian Central Bank sets exchange rates daily.
Decades of political stability, strict law enforcement, excellent relations with all its neighbors have made Jordan an oasis of peace and stability with superior living standards and highly industrialized economy. This is what makes the country an outstandingly safe and enjoyable place to visit for business and holiday travels alike.
As tourism is one of the most important sectors in Jordan’s economy, the Kingdom takes tourism and the safety of tourists extremely seriously. Because of the above mentioned reason your safety is the government’s special responsibility and generally there is no place in Amman or areas outside Amman where you would feel unsecure.
Public minibuses are quite cheap and convenient forms of transport for people living in Jordan.These buses leave only when full, so waiting times of an hour or more are inevitable. It is not sophisticated nor scheduled but it works. For locals. If you have patience or like adventures do not hesitate to try it.
Taxis are quite inexpensive and the most convenient forms of transportation in Jordan.
White – painted „service taxis” offer transportation between fixed routes and are to be shared with other passangers. It is a public taxi service which can accommodate up to 5 persons and will pick-up and drop-off people according to a specific route. At the starting point, the taxi will only move if all 5 passenger seats are filled and/or paid for.
Yellow taxis are private taxis, they can be taken from ranks outside larger hotels or hailed on the streets. There are also the on-call silver taxis that provide English speaking drivers and they should be called 30 minutes before departure.
